NHL action comes to the Canadian Tire Centre where the Ottawa Senators host the Detroit Red Wings.
The Detroit Red Wings are looking to rebound from a disappointing 2016-17 season that caused the team to miss out on the postseason for the first time in what seemed like forever. The Red Wings opened the year on a positive note after controlling the Minnesota Wild in a 4-2 victory on Thursday night. The balanced Wings attack received goals from Anthony Mantha, Dylan Larkin, Henrik Zetterberg and Martin Frk while Mike Green logged four helpers and Mantha kicked in with a pair of assists.

Minnesota didn’t score until the third period with Joel Eriksson scoring at the two minute mark with Chris Stewart lighting the lamp a mere 48 seconds later that temporarily tied the score at 2-2. Devan Dubnyk absorbed the loss for the Wild on 27 saves while Jimmy Howard came up big with 37 saves to open the year with a win.
The Ottawa Senators began the season with a 5-4, shootout defeat at the hands of the visiting Washington Capitals who were also playing their first game. The Senators struggled defensively and had the most trouble with Alex Ovechkin who earned a hat trick with three third period tallies while also scoring in the SO with Brett Connolly scoring in regulation. Evgeny Kuznetsov also lit the lamp in the shootout and added a trio of assists.
Mark Stone paced the Senators attack with a pair of goals with Chris Wideman and Derick Brassard also scoring with both recording assists while Bobby Ryan posted two helpers. Braden Holtby made 28 stops to get the win and Craig Anderson recorded 24 saves for the Sens.
Under is 5-0 in Red Wings last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of less than .400 and over is 2-0-2 in Red Wings last 4 vs. a team with a losing record and under is 7-2-1 in Red Wings last 10 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game. Senators are 5-0 in their last 5 Saturday games and Senators are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference and Senators are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. Atlantic. Home team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and Red Wings are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings and Red Wings are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Ottawa.
The Red Wings have done well in this matchup so for now I lean to the Senators to avoid a poor start...
