Rogers Arena and the Vancouver Canucks host the Edmonton Oilers in Saturday NHL action.

The Edmonton Oilers are shooting for consecutive victories when they visit the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. The Oilers began 2017-18 in fashion with a 3-0 win versus the visiting Calgary Flames on Tuesday night behind some clutch scoring and even better goaltending. The Edmonton offense was all about Connor McDavid who scored once in the first and twice in the third for a hat trick with the third goal coming with the empty net.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Edmonton Oilers - 10/7/17 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Leon Draisaitl logged a pair of assists while Patrick Maroon and Milan Lucic added helpers. Calgary netminder was outstanding in defeat as he was peppered with 44 shots and allowed just two pucks get by him. Cam Talbot gave Edmonton 26 stops so the defense at least gave him a fighting chance and he was up to the task in picking up the win.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the Vancouver Canucks were one of the top teams in the game. Fast forward to 2017-18 and the team is obviously in a rebuilding mode. Vancouver finished well out of the postseason ace a year ago and made several acquisitions although whether that’s enough to ‘get the team to the next level is wait and see.

The Canucks added Thomas Vanek, Alexander Burmistov and Sam Gagner but the signings aren’t expected to have any type of major impact. The Canucks are said to be willing to trade the Sedin’s although the market probably not big for two players that are beginning to get some age them. Anders Nilsson and Jacob Markstrom need big season’s in the nets although neither will be able to carry the team over a full season.

Under is 3-0-2 in Oilers last 5 Saturday games and Oilers are 0-4 in their last 4 games playing on 2 days rest and over is 4-1 in Oilers last 5 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game. Under is 2-0-2 in Canucks last 4 home games and under is 5-0-1 in Canucks last 6 games following a win and Canucks are 1-10 in their last 11 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game. Oilers are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings and under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings and under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings in Vancouver.

I’m not sure the changes Vancouver made in the offseason make a difference over the long haul or in this one either…
