The Washington Capitals welcome the Montreal Canadiens to the Capital One Arena for NHL action on Saturday.
For the second straight year the Buffalo Sabres began the season facing the Montreal Canadiens and for the result was the same with the Habs skating away with a win. The Habs prevailed 3-2 in a shootout behind the efforts of Jonathan Douin who scored in regulation and tallied the game winner in round two of the SO.

Phillip Danault also sored for the Canadiens midway through the third to erase a 2-1 deficit that eventually sent the game to overtime. The Sabres took a 1-0 lead on Jason Pominville’s power play goal in the first off a feed from Seth Griffith. The Swords took a 2-1 edge when Jonathan Drouin picked up a loose puck on a Montreal turnover and found the stick of Max Pacioretty who lit the lamp.
The win went to Carey Price who saved the Canadiens defense with a monster 45 save performance while Robin Lehner absorbed the loss despite recording a solid 38 stops. Both teams logged plenty of shots on goal but the respective goalies kept their teams alive.
The Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators met in the season opener on Thursday night and the Capitals were the only team smiling following a 5-4 victory in a shootout. Alex Ovchkin was the offensive star for Washington with a hat trick while Evgeny Kuznetsov scored and posted three helpers followed by Brett Connolly with a goal.
Ottawa perceived a pair of goals from Mark Stone with Derick Brassard also scoring and logging a pair of assists. Chris Wideman also lit the lamp and posted an assist while Craig Anderson made 24 stops in the Senators defeat. The win went to Braden Holtby who recorded 28 saves in the Caps win on the road.
