Carl Soderberg lit the lamp for Colorado’s lone goal in the second period that temporarily cut the New Jersey lead to 2-1. Avalanche goalie Jonathan Bernier was peppered with 39 shots and recorded 35 saves in defeat. The Devils received a monster 40 stops from Cory Schneider who picked up the win.
The Buffalo Sabres were out to begin the 2017-18 on a winning note but their defense struggled and the offense couldn’t make up the difference in a 6-3 loss at the New York Islanders on Saturday. Buffalo trailed 4-0 before Evander Kane scored twice with Jack Eichel scoring in the third while Eichel and Kane both added assists.
John Tavares and Casey Cizikas paced the Islanders attack with a pair of tallies each while Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier also found the back of the net. Buffalo starting goalie Robin Lehner allowed four goals on 16 shots before getting pulled in the second in favor of Chad Johnson who gave a goal on 16 shots. New York saw 26 saves from Jaroslav Halak to begin the year 1-0

It’s tough to judge either team by their performance in one game but I see no reason to lay chalk here…
