The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals renew hostilities for the first time this season as both teams look to make an early season statement with a victory.
The Penguins head into the Verizon Center looking to cool off Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals who have been red hot to start the season as their fearless leader netted seven goals in the team’s first two games and will be out to add more against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins on this night. Pittsburgh has had mixed results to begin the year as they were blasted in Chicago by a 10-1 final but have rebounded for some impressive efforts in their own right and a road win here would greatly diminish that ugly loss to the Hawks and warrant their trip to the White House they enjoyed last night as the reigning Cup champions. Pittsburgh is expected to send Matt Murray to the crease here as he will face off against Braden Holtby as goaltending will figure to play a role in the end result in this one.

The Capitals meanwhile look to stay undefeated in regulation and earn a point in their fourth straight game to open the season in what should be the marquee matchup in an otherwise quiet night on the ice. Washington is loaded at both ends of the rink and while they did have some parts of last year’s team move on they are still very much a favourite in the Eastern Conference but the shadows of their past playoff failures will continue to haunt them until they can finally break through. Washington has some stiff competition in the Metro division including the Pens, Blue Jackets, and Rangers and they know they value of divisional games as it could play a factor in determining home ice advantage come playoff time.
The Pens are 1-4 in their last five road games and 46-19 in their last 65 against the Metro while the Caps are 9-3 in their last 12 Wednesday games and 44-20 in their last 64 overall. Pittsburgh has been up and down through three games and while this should see a much better effort I do think the Caps are playing the better hockey right now and they don’t get this price at home often.
