The New York Islanders look to snap out of their ugly road losing skid as they head into Denver to take on the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.
The Islanders look to snap out of their five game losing skid away from home as they face off against an Avalanche side that has quietly been pretty good on home ice this season and will look to pull off another impressive win against the Isles in this one. New York has had trouble away from the Barclay’s Center but they are still one of the higher scoring teams in the NHL this season and they have beaten up the league’s doormats as they are 15-6 in their last 21 games against a team with a losing record and the Avalanche certainly fit that criteria. New York is expected to send Thomas Greiss to the crease here as he will face off against Semyon Varlamov who is having a pretty decent season and has certainly given his team a chance to win on most evenings.

The Avalanche were expected to be a contender for top spot in the NHL draft this offseason as very few had them in the running for a potential playoff spot, and while they have done much better than anticipated they are still well short of joining the league’s elite. Colorado has won five of their last seven against a team in the Eastern Conference and are 9-3 in their last 12 home games against a team with a losing road record which should set them up to keep this one competitive as the Islanders seem like a totally different group at home than they are on the road. Colorado has also won four of their last five matchups with the Islanders when these two sides meet up in Denver but overall it is the visitors who are the deeper team and have more offensive threats.
The Isles are winless in their last five on the road and have played to the over in six of their last eight games on Sunday while the Avs are are 17-36 in their last 53 Sunday games and have played to the under in their last four meetings with New York at home. The Isles are a tough team to sort out and right now they are on a down swing and that continues here with a Colorado victory.
