TV:

The Edmonton Oilers look to shake off a tough overtime loss to the Blackhawks as they welcome the Winnipeg Jets to town on New Year’s Eve.

The Jets got a big win in their first game without Mark Schiefele and will be out for another as they take to the road to face off against the Oilers who had been playing their best hockey of the season before the Christmas break before losing an overtime game to Chicago in their first outing back. Winnipeg has had a very strong campaign but a huge part of their success is now on the shelf as Mark Schiefele will be out for almost two months with a shoulder injury after a collision with Edmonton defenseman Brandon Davidson and you can be sure the Jets would love to get some retribution both physically and on the score board with Edmonton in this spot in what is shaping up to be a very competitive game.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Winnipeg Jets - 12/31/17 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Oilers have struggled against Central division foes this season as they are a modest 2-6 I their last eight games and face off against a Jets side here that is 7-1 in their last eight games against the Pacific division but has been putrid on the road. Edmonton got off to a very slow start this season and many had questioned the potential overzealous expectations placed on them this season as they were projected in many circles as a Cup favourite thanks to their surprising run a season ago and offense led by Connor McDavid. Edmonton also has Cam Talbot back which makes them a tough out against team in the league and against the Jets here it makes sense to see Edmonton as a home favourite.

The Jets are 7-1 in their last eight against the Pacific and 1-8 in their last nine road games while the Oilers are 4-1 in their last five against a team with a winning record and have played to the under in four of their last five meetings with Winnipeg in Edmonton. The Oilers have been playing much better of late and at home here on New Year’s Eve I expect them to do enough to take down the Jets who struggle mightily on the road.
