NHL action comes to the Gila River Arena where the Arizona Coyotes host the Edmonton Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers are playing catch up in the standings and need to change their direction before the hole is too big to climb out of. Edmonton has three points to their credit in the past eight games after a 2-1 defeat at the Nashville Predators left the team staring at a three game skid with just three goals scored in this stretch.

The Predators scoring came in the opening period with Craig Smith and Viktor Arvidsson both lighting the lamp. The Oilers cut the deficit in half on a Connor McDavid tally just 45 seconds in to the second period but neither team could do anything offensively the rest of the way. Pekka Rinne stopped 25 shots for Nashville to get the win while Cam Talbot recorded 22 saves for Edmonton.

It’s been awhile since the Arizona Coyotes have been to the postseason and it’s going to be at least another year with the team stuck on ten wins. Arizona comes off of a 2-1, shootout defeat a the hands of the visiting New York Rangers where the defensive end of the ice was outstanding.

The Coyotes scored first in the opening period on a goal from Anthony Duclair on the power play on assists from Derek Stepan and Christian Dvorak. Jimmy Vesey scored the equalizer for the Rangers on an unassisted goal at 5:11 of the second before Mika Zibanejad scored the only goal of the shootout. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 38 shots for New York while Antti Raanta made 24 saves for the Coyotes.

Oilers are 0-4 in their last 4 road games and under is 6-0 in Oilers last 6 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game and Oilers are 1-7 in their last 8 vs. Western Conference. Coyotes are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. Pacific and Coyotes are 4-0 in their last 4 Friday games and Coyotes are 1-11 in their last 12 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. Oilers are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in Arizona and under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and Oilers are 9-26 in the last 35 meetings.

I think this is risky regardless of which side you back. I’ll go with the Coyotes for now but I don’t see myself betting this…
