The Nashville Predators look to inch closer to claiming the President’s Trophy as they head into Washington to take on the Capitals on Thursday night.
The Predators head into the Verizon Center on Thursday looking to clinch top spot in the league as they face off with a Capitals side that has clinched top spot in the Metro division and is awaiting their first round opponent. Nashville surprisingly has still not laid claim to the Central division crown thanks to a spectacular season from the Winnipeg Jets who are three points back of the Preds with 110 points but Nashville is in the driver’s seat with their spectacular road record and get the Caps here who have nothing to play for in their final two games. Nashville is 3-8 in their last 11 trips to Washington but are 6-2 in their last eight against the Caps across all competition and should be given a real look here as a slight road underdog. Pekka Rinne is expected to get the start as he will face off against Braden Holtby in a show down of two of the league’s top shot stoppers.

The Capitals meanwhile have won seven of their last eight games to clinch top spot in the Metro division once again and with a dominating effort against teams from the Central they have a great shot at keeping their winning ways intact here. Washington is a staggering 50-19 in their last 69 games at the Verizon Center and they have dominated the Predators when the teams face off in this building and while both sides can really shut teams down offensively, the over is 7-1-1 in the last nine show downs with these teams and we could very well see that trend continue here.
The Predators are 10-3 in their last 13 road games and 5-1 in their last six Thursday games while the Caps are 5-1 in their last six following a win and 4-0 in their last four against the West. Nashville has a great shot at winning the President’s Trophy but it will have to wait at least one more game as the Caps get it done and make a statement in doing so.
