The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers meet up in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night as these two bitter rivals kick off their first round playoff series.

The Flyers look to gain control of home ice at the onset of their series with the Penguins as they head into Pittsburgh for game one on Wednesday night in what is one of the most anticipated playoff showdowns of the season thanks to the hostility felt between these two sides. Philadelphia has been one of the league’s streakiest teams this season as they look like Cup contenders on one night and follow it up with a week’s worth of stinkers and they know that if they’re going to unseat the two time defending Cup champions that they need to find some consistency in their game and that starts on Wednesday night. The Flyers have lost four meetings in a row with the Penguins and are 1-5 in their last six at the Consol Energy Center but they will have to buck that trend and snap out of their road losing ways if they’re going to continue their chase of the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins meanwhile have all the bragging rights in this rivalry as they are the two time defending Cup champions and head into this series as a huge favourite but the Flyers actually got the best of the Pens when these two sides last faced off in the postseason. Pittsburgh comes into the playoffs on a winning note as they are 4-1 in their last five games overall and have won a staggering seven of their last eight conference quarterfinal games and the odds makers are well aware of that trend in this spot. Pittsburgh has the offensive depth to keep the Philly blue line honest and with the Flyers’ goaltending situation being as clear as mud I think it is safe to say that the Pens have the edge in the crease as well.

The Flyers are 5-2 in their last seven against the Metro and have played to the over in 9 of their last 12 while the Pens are 5-1 in their last six meetings at home and have played to the over in 15 of their last 21 at home against the Flyers. The line here is chalky as the Pens should get it done to start the series but the better play is on the total as these two should put on a show to start the playoffs in a game that goes over the number.
