The NHL Stanley Cup Final kicks off Monday with the Washington Capitals visiting the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Washington Capitals have proven to be resilient in the postseason and were once again at Tampa Bay on Wednesday in a 4-0 victory in game seven of the Eastern Conference finals. Tampa Bay had several golden opportunities to score but couldn’t cash in and that left Andrei Vasilevskiy as the Bolts only chance but he allowed three goals on 22 shots.

The Capitals saw Alex Ovechkin light the lamp just 62 seconds in to the first for what proved to be the winner. Andre Burakovsky scored twice in the second period to push the advantage to 3-0 before Nicklas Backstrom ended any hopes the Lightning had of a miracle come back with his empty net tally at the 16:17 mark. Braden Holtby gave the Caps 29 saves as Washington won back to back games to punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Vegas Golden Knights have enjoyed a fairy tale season and the fairy tale hasn’t ended with the first year team playing for the Stanley cup. Vegas has topple the LA Kings, San Jose and Winnipeg and were especially impressive versus the Jets. The Golden Knights lost game one of that series before rattling off four straight victories capped off by a 2-1 decision in the game five clincher.
Throughout the postseason Vegas has shown the ability to score or shutdown opponents when needed and defense was the star of the show in defeating the Jets. Josh Morrissey scored the lone goal for Winnipeg in the first and Connor Hellebuyck made 30 stops in a losing effort. The Vegas attack saw goals off the stick of Alex Tuch and Ryan Reaves with Marc-Andre Fleury recording 31 stops.
Under is 3-0-2 in Capitals last 5 vs. a team with a winning record and under is 3-0-2 in Capitals last 5 overall and under is 2-0-2 in Capitals last 4 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game. Golden Knights are 4-0 in their last 4 Monday games and Golden Knights are 4-0 in their last 4 overall and Golden Knights are 15-1 in their last 16 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
The speedy Knights against the grind it out Capitals should be an entertaining series but for game one I’ll back the over and dig further in to it…
