The Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights take the ice at T-Mobile Arena in game two of the Stanley Cup finals.

The Washington Capitals dropped the Stanley Cup opener 6-4 at Vegas in a wild score fest where the goaltending and defense struggled throughout. Washington was balanced on the attack with Brett Connolly and Nicklas Backstrom scoring in the first with John Carlson lighting the lamp in the second followed by Tom Wilson’s goal in the third.

TJ Oshie gave the Capitals a pair of helpers while Nicklas Backstrom added an assist but a strong offensive performance was still not enough as Braden Holtby surrendered five goals on 33 shots to absorb the loss for Washington.

The Vegas Golden Knights story book season continued with a game one win versus visiting Washington where the team traded goals all night before scoring three straight to end the game and erase a 4-3 third period deficit. Colin Miller and William Karlsson lit the lamp in the opening period and Reilly Smith scored in the second.

With the Capitals taking a 4-3 lead just 70 seconds in to the third, Ryan Reaves evened the score at 2:41 for the Golden Knights before Tomas Nosek tallied the winner at 9:44 and then hit the empty net with three seconds remaining. Smith gave Vegas an assist and Deryk Engelland added two more assists to make the 28 saves of Marc-Andre Fleury a winner.

Under is 3-0-2 in Capitals last 5 games playing on 1 days rest and under is 3-0-2 in Capitals last 5 vs. a team with a winning record and under is 3-0-2 in Capitals last 5 overall. Golden Knights are 4-0 in their last 4 overall and Golden Knights are 15-1 in their last 16 home games vs. a team with a winning road record and Golden Knights are 7-1 in their last 8 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

I don’t think trends are much of a help with neither team playing each other enough to develop a history. I know Washington better be on guard here as another loss would be a tough hole to climb out of and for now I’ll go with the road dog and update…
