The Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues meet Tuesday in NHL action at the Enterprise Center.
The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a trip to the conference finals and have a chance to make back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in franchise history. When it comes to offensive firepower, few can hang with the Jets depth when it comes to a trio of Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor and Blake Wheeler, all three guys are capable of taking over games. Oh, and that doesn’t even include Patrik Laine, who has found the back of the net 80 times in 155 games played. The Jets also seem to be set defensively with Dustin Byfuglien and Jacob Trouba on the ice and Connor Hellebuyck in net. Winnipeg was fifth in the league last season with an average of 2.63 goals allowed per game. With this sort of balance, there’s no question why the Winnipeg Jets are a popular pick to win the Stanley Cup this season. The Winnipeg Jets have won four of their last five regular season openers.

The St. Louis Blues missed the playoffs last year despite 94 points, and many are expecting a bounce back year under Mike Yeo and a revamped roster. The Blues added a lot of offensive potential to their lineup by bringing in Tyler Bozak, Ryan O'Reilly, Patrick Maroon and David Perron, which should not only boost the scoring potential but adds experience as well. There’s also now going to be less pressure on guys such as Vladimir Tarasenko and Brayden Schenn to carry the team. Defensively, the Blues were sixth in the league last year with an average of 2.71 goals per game allowed, and that is a number that could improve if Jake Allen ends up returning to the goalie he was before last season. The St. Louis Blues have won four of their last five regular season openers.
The Jets are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. Western Conference, 5-0 in their last 5 games playing on 3 or more days rest and 0-4 in their last 4 overall. The Blues are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. Western Conference, 2-9 in their last 11 vs. Central and 1-5 in their last 6 overall. The Jets are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in St. Louis, 8-2 in the last 10 meetings and the under is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings in St. Louis.
These are two of the more balanced teams in the league and popular picks to win the whole thing, so you can make a strong case for either side in the season opener when everything feels like a toss-up until we sink our teeth into things. Instead of picking a side, I'm going with the under here, as defense tends to have the edge early in the season and both of these teams are loaded on that side of the ice. Also, there's been four or less goals scored in four of the last six meetings between the Jets and Blues. So, give me the under.
