The Canadiens saw Artturi Lehkonen score the opening goal in the first with Andrew Shaw lighting the lamp on the power play in the second. Auston Matthews scored twice for Toronto including the overtime winner with John Tavares adding a goal.
Carey Price gave up three goals for the Canadiens on 26 shots to fall to 0-0-1 while Frederik Andersen recorded 34 saves to give off the season with a victory.
The Pittsburgh Penguins began the season with a wild 7-6, overtime win against visiting Washington. Pittsburgh saw Jake Guentzel post a hat trick while Kris Letang scored twice. Derick Brassard and Evgeni Malkin also lit the lamp for the Pens while Matt Murray stopped 30 shots.
TJ Oshie led Washington with two goals while Jakub Vrana, Brooks Orpik, Alex Ovechkin an John Carlson found the back of the net. Braden Holtby was charged with all seven goals on 41 shots for the Caps.
