The New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings meet in NHL action from the Staples Center on Saturday afternoon.
The New Jersey Devils come into this game looking to rebound after a 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks last time out. Travis Zajac and Nikita Gusev scored 3:59 apart in the 1st period to stake the Devils an early 2-0 lead, the that lead would vanish by the end of the 2nd period as San Jose pulled one back just over two minutes into the second period and tied the game with just over four minutes to go in the 2nd period. The 3rd period didn’t produce a winner, so it was off to overtime where San Jose ended things rather quickly, scoring just :38 into the extra frame, sending New Jersey back with just a single point to show for their efforts. Cory Schneider took the loss, falling to 1-6-2 on the year after allowing all 3 goals on 30 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Los Angeles Kings will be looking to build on a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last time out. Blake Lizotte opened the scoring for L.A. just under three minutes into the game before Trevor Lewis doubled the lead late in the 2nd period for the Kings, despite being outshot 14-6 in the middle frame. Pittsburgh pulled a goal back less than seven minutes into the 3rd, but despite the Kings being outshot 14-8 in the final period, L.A. held on for the win, sending Pittsburgh back empty-handed with nothing to show for their hard work. Calvin Petersen got the win to improve to 2-3-0 on the year after stopping 35 of 36 shots faced in the winning effort.
New Jersey is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record and 24-52 in their last 76 road games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Los Angeles is 3-7 in their last 10 home games and 8-20 in their last 28 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games as a home favorite. New Jersey is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
New Jersey’s road woes came up and reared their ugly head against the Sharks, but the problem here is that we’re getting plus money with a Devils team that’s playing much better hockey than the Kings as of late. Yes, L.A. stepped up against the Penguins, but the Kings have also had trouble with winning consistently. Head-to-head, the trends point towards the Devils, and between two teams not going anywhere come playoff time, it might be the only edge here. I’ll take a shot with New Jersey and the plus money in this one.
