The Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks meet Saturday in NHL action at the SAP Center.
The Pittsburgh Penguins need a win here to snap a five-game losing streak. The Pittsburgh Penguins are averaging 3.2 goals per game and are scoring on 21.1 percent of their power play opportunities. Bryan Rust leads Pittsburgh with 24 goals, Evgeni Malkin has 42 assists and Kris Letang has 162 shots on goal. Defensively, the Pittsburgh Penguins are allowing 2.8 goals per game and are killing 81.8 percent of their opponents power plays. Matt Murray has given up 92 goals on 928 shots faced and Tristan Jarry has allowed 67 goals on 917 shots. The Pittsburgh Penguins have allowed three or less goals in 15 of their last 20 games.
The San Jose Sharks need a win after losing five of their last six games. The San Jose Sharks are averaging 2.5 goals per game and are scoring on 16 percent of their power play opportunities. Evander Kane leads San Jose with 21 goals, Erik Karlsson has 34 assists and Brent Burns has 204 shots on goal. Defensively, the San Jose Sharks are allowing 3.3 goals per game and are killing 85.8 percent of their opponents power plays. Aaron Dell has given up 84 goals on 903 shots faced and Martin Jones has allowed 107 goals on 1,008 shots. The San Jose Sharks have allowed three or more goals in 11 of their last 17 games.
The Penguins are 1-4 in their last 5 road games, 5-2 in their last 7 Saturday games and 8-3 in their last 11 vs. Pacific. The Sharks are 2-6 in their last 8 games playing on 1 days rest, 8-20 in their last 28 games as an underdog and 1-4 in their last 5 home games. The under is 6-2-1 in Penguins last 9 road games. The under is 4-1 in Sharks last 5 overall. The Penguins are 4-13 in the last 17 meetings in San Jose and 1-4 in the last 5 meetings. The under is 12-4-1 in the last 17 meetings.
The Pittsburgh Penguins should win this game, but they should have a few games during this five-game losing streak and things haven't gone as planned. I can't back a team that's lost five straight and on the end of a back to back. However, I'm certainly not backing a poor San Jose Sharks squad that's sloppy defensively and has provided very little value in the underdog role lately. Instead, I'll take the under, which is a very strong trend when the Penguins and Sharks meet, and it's been a strong trend the last couple of weeks for the Sharks overall. Give me the under.
