The Arizona Coyotes and the Calgary Flames meet in NHL action from the Gila River Arena on Friday night.
The Arizona Coyotes will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 4-2 win over Vancouver last time out. Carl Soderberg got the opening goal for the Coyotes just 7:27 into the game and the lead would hold going into the 3rd where Vancouver took a 2-1 lead with the tying goal and go-ahead goal came in a span of 2:57. Nick Schmaltz tied the game at two for the Coyotes just after the midway point of the 3rd before Lawson Crouse restored Arizona’s lead just 2:29 later and Oliver Ekman-Larsson would ice the win with an empty-netter in the last minute of the game. Darcy Kuemper got the win to improve to 16-9-2 on the year after stopping 36 of 38 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Calgary Flames will also look to build on a 3-2 overtime win in their last outing. Columbus raced out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals 2;26 apart and the Blue Jackets would hold that lead going into the 3rd where Elias Lindholm would pull a goal back for Calgary just after the midway point of the 3rd and Matthew Tkachuk would tie the game at two with less than two minutes to go, eventually forcing OT. We looked destined for a shootout before TJ Brodie buried the game-winner for the Flames with just :11 to go in the extra frame. Cam Talbot got the win to improve to 11-10-1 on the year after stopping 20 of 22 shots faced in the winning effort.
Arizona is 2-10 in their last 12 road games and 2-6 in their last 8 games following a win while the under is 7-3-1 in their last 11 games overall. Calgary is 2-6 in their last 8 home games and 3-7 in their last 10 games following a win while the over is 10-2-1 in their last 13 games overall. Arizona is 2-5 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams and 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Calgary.
I’m not really running to bet this game as neither side has performed well in this spot as of late, with Calgary dropping 6 of their last 8 at home and Arizona losing 10 of their last 12 on the road. However, Arizona appears to have gotten a lift from integrating Darcy Kuemper back in the crease and Antti Raanta has proven to be a capable fill-in for Arizona this season. Calgary’s had issues lately, so while I wouldn’t be surprised is the Flames got the job done at home, Arizona’s more desperate for points trying to chase down the Flames in the standings and I think it shows here as the Coyotes pick up a huge two points in the playoff race with a victory.
