The New York Islanders and the Florida Panthers meet in game four of their best-of-five qualifying round series from Scotiabank Arena on Friday afternoon.
The New York Islanders will try to close out the series in four games after failing to complete the sweep, with the Panthers taking game three by a final score of 3-2 last time out.
The game was scoreless through the opening 20 minutes but Erik Haula would give Florida the lead just after the four-minute mark of the second period. Jean-Gabriel Pageau would tie the game at one for New York with 3:34 to go in the middle frame, sending us to the 3rd tied at one. Mike Hoffman gave the Panthers the led at 2-1 just :41 into the third period and Brian Boyle pushed the lead to 3-1 just 2:07 later. Brock Nelson would pull a goal back with just 1:27 to go in the game, but 3-2 was as close as the Isles would get as Florida slammed the door shut the rest of the way.
Sergei Bobrovsky got the win after stopping 20 of 22 shots faced in the victory while Semyon Varlamov ended up with the loss for New York after allowing all three goals on 22 shots faced in the defeat.
New York is 3-13 in their last 16 games against a team with a winning record and 2-8 in their last 10 games overall while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 playoff games as a favorite. Florida is 2-5 in their last 7 games overall and 1-5 in their last 6 playoff games as an underdog while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. New York is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
I think the Islanders got a bit ahead of themselves in game three as they had done such a good job with stifling the Panthers in the first two games that the Islanders had already had their tickets to the next round punched. But Florida was ready and pounced on all of the mistakes that the Islanders made and could very well force a game five here. However, New York will have had time to digest the mistakes they made and I’m sure we will get a better defensive performance from the Islanders in this one. I’m still convinced that something’s wrong with Sergei Bobrovsky and the Panthers almost let game three slip away late if we’re being honest. I’ll take the Islanders to win game four and lay the juice to close out the series.
