The Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals meet in a round-robin NHL matchup from Scotiabank Arena on Sunday.
The Boston Bruins will look to rebound from a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in their last round-robin game. Tampa Bay opened the scoring early in the 1st and went 2-0 up just after the midway point of the first period before Charlie McAvoy got the Bruins on the board with just over three minutes to go in the second period and Chris Wagner tied the game at two within the first two minutes of the 3rd. The tie would hold going into the later stages of the 3rd but Tampa Bay would score with 1:27 to go to steal the win and the points while Boston remained winless in round-robin play. Tuukka Rask took the loss, allowing three goals on 35 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Washington Capitals will also be looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in their last round-robin game. Philadelphia opened the scoring with just under seven minutes to go in the opening period and the Flyers would double their lead just after the midway point of the second period. Philly pushed the lead to 3-0 early on in the 3rd but Travis Boyd would respond just :12 later for Washington but 3-1 was as close as the Caps would get as Philadelphia rode the 3-1 lead to the finish line. Braden Holtby took the loss after allowing 3 goals on 21 shots faced in the losing effort in goal.
Boston is 16-6 in their last 22 games overall and 7-3 in their last 10 games against the rest of the Eastern Conference while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 Sunday games. Washington is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 10-3 in their last 13 games as an underdog while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 Sunday games. The under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The last meeting between these two ended with 9 goals and while I’m not sure it’s a 7-2 game like the one the Bruins ended up winning back just before Christmas, I think we see something along the same lines here. Both Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak have been shaky in goal for the Bruins and I’m starting to wonder if Braden Holtby is starting to fatigue without a viable option to back him up in goal. I think we see a higher-scoring affair here, so I’ll side with the over as my free pick in this game but my stronger play is on the side and I have that available as a premium pick that you can find here.
