The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators meet in NHL action from the Canadian Tire Centre on Friday night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to build on their season-opening 5-4 overtime win over Montreal last time out. Toronto fell behind with just over seven minutes to go, but William Nylander would tie the game at one with just over four minutes to go in the opening frame. Montreal would restore their lead in the dying seconds of the first period and would forge ahead 3-1 early on in the 2nd but Nylander would pull one back with his 2nd goal of the game and John Tavares would score 1:21 later to tie the game at three heading into the 3rd. Montreal re-took the lead just over a minute into the 3rd before Jimmy Vesey tied the game at four just past the midway point of the 3rd period. Neither side would find a winner in regulation, so it was off to OT where Morgan Rielly potted the winner with 1:36 to go in the extra frame to give the Buds the win and the extra point that goes with it. Frederik Andersen got the win in goal for Toronto after stopping 28 of 32 shots faced in the winning effort.

The Ottawa Senators come into the 2021 season looking to shake off another forgettable season in the Canadian capital after finishing with a record of 25-34-12, sitting 15th in the East and 7th in the Atlantic division, missing out on the playoffs for the 3rd straight season. It’s a pretty big overhaul for the Sens considering last year’s squad, as Craig Anderson, Anthony Duclair, Ron Hainsey, Mikkel Boedker and Bobby Ryan are all gone. But in to replace them are Matt Murray in goal after being acquired from the Penguins as well as Alex Galchenyuk, Derek Stepan, Cedric Paquette and Evgenii Dadonov just to name a few. The massive and productive offseason haul brings in a ton of support to put around pieces like Brady Tkachuk who led the Sens with 44 points last year, Connor Brown who had 43 points and Thomas Chabot who had a team-high 33 assists for the Senators last season. Only time will tell if the moves paid off for Ottawa or if it was all for naught in another frustrating season in Ottawa.

Toronto is 1-4 in their last 5 road games and 4-1 in their last 5 Friday games while the over is 7-2 in their last 9 road games. Ottawa is 5-2 in their last 7 home games and 17-35 in their last 52 games overall while the over is 24-8 in their last 32 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600. Toronto is 3-8 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams in Ottawa and the home team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.

The plus money with Ottawa is tempting, but I’m still worried about the Senators who have some rust to shake off here with this being their opening game. On the other hand I think Toronto wins, but this price is too steep for the money line and I think it’s a one-goal game so I’m going to take Ottawa with the plus on the puck line in this one.
