The Colorado Avalanche and the Los Angeles Kings meet in NHL action from the Staples Center on Tuesday night.

The Colorado Avalanche will look to build on their 8-0 romp of the Blues for their first win of the season last time out. Neither side scored in the first period but Colorado would break things open in the second when Gabriel Landeskog opened things up with the game’s first goal just after the four minute mark of the second. Andre Burakovsky made it 2-0 at the 12:24 mark before Landeskog added his 2nd of the game just 2:10 later and Mikko Rantanen pushed it to 4-0 just 2:31 after that. Nazem Kadri made it five 1:13 into the 3rd and Nathan MacKinnon and Joonas Donskoi would make it 6-0 and 7-0 :33 apart just after the midway point of the 3rd. Devon Toews would put the cherry on top to make it 8-0 with just over five minutes to go and the Blues wouldn’t even register a consolation goal as Colorado rode the lead to the finish. Philipp Grubauer got the win to improve to 1-1 after stopping all 21 shots faced for his 1st shutout of the year.

The Los Angeles Kings will look to get in the win column after starting the year with a pair of OT losses after a 4-3 OT loss to Minnesota last time out. Minnesota opened the scoring just :21 into the game before Gabriel Vilardi tied things at one with just over three minutes to go in the first. Blake Lizotte gave L.A. the lead just after the seven-minute mark of the second and Andreas Athanasiou made it 3-1 just 3:20 later and the lead held going into the 3rd but the Wild would pull one back at the 7:38 mark of the 3rd and tie the game up with two seconds remaining in regulation, forcing OT. Minnesota would complete the comeback and break the Kings’ hearts with :11 to go in the extra frame, handing the Kings a second OT loss. Jonathan Quick took the loss, falling to 0-0-2 after giving up all four goals on 44 shots in the losing effort.

Colorado is 14-4 in their last 18 road games and 12-4 in their last 16 games as a road favorite while the over is 10-2 in their last 12 games overall. Los Angeles is 5-2 in their last 7 games as an underdog and 4-1 in their last 5 games playing on two days rest while the under is 7-3-1 in their last 11 games overall.

This is a steep price with the Avs even after an 8-0 win and Colorado’s only lost by one in each of their first two games, going to OT in each. However, this is still a Kings team that I’m not sold on at the moment and Colorado has to be feeling about as good as can be after blowing St. Louis’ doors off last time out. I think the Avs ride that momentum to a puck line win and cover in this one so give me Colorado -1.5 as my pick for this game.
