The New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers meet in NHL action from Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
The New Jersey Devils come into this game fresh off of a 2-1 overtime win over Boston last time out. Miles Wood opened the scoring for New Jersey with the lone goal of the opening period and the lead held until late in the second period when Boston found an equalizing goal short-handed, sending us to a 3rd period tied at one goal apiece, Neither side found the winning goal in regulation, so it was off to overtime where Yegor Sharangovich buried the winner with less than two seconds to go, giving the Devils the win and the extra point that goes with it. MacKenzie Blackwood got the win after stopping 27 of 28 shots faced in the winning effort to improve to 1-0-1 this season.
The New York Rangers will also be looking to build on their first win of the season coming in the form of a 5-0 win over the Islanders last time out. Pavel Buchnevich got to work early by giving the Rangers the lead just 2:12 into the game and Artemi Panarin followed up with the Rangers’ second goal with just over six minutes to go in the opening frame. Buchnevich made it 3-0 early in the 2nd and Kaapo Kakko pushed the lead to 4-0 with just under five minutes to go in the 2nd. Panarin iced the win for the Rangers by adding his 2nd goal of the game with just over four minutes to go to join Buchnevich with two goals for the Rangers in the win. Alexandar Georgiev got the win after stopping all 23 shots faced for his 1st shutout of the season.
New Jersey is 26-54 in their last 80 road games and 18-38 in their last 56 games following a win while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 road games. New York is 2-5 in their last 7 home games and 1-5 in their last 6 games overall whiule the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games as a favorite. The home team is 14-5 in the last 19 meetings between these two teams.
This matchup features two teams that have rebuilt their rosters in the last couple of years, so there’s a lot of youth and speed on both sides. However, this game also features a pair of the league’s bright next generation of goaltenders in New Jersey’s MacKenzie Blackwood and New York’s Igor Shesterkin. I think in this one, the goaltending takes cneter stage and we see a goaltending clinic, so I’ll side with the under in this one.
