The New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders meet in NHL action from the Nassau Coliseum on Thursday night.

The New Jersey Devils will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers last time out. Travis Zajac opened the scoring for the Devils just :32 into the game and that lead held up until New York tied the game at one just under three minutes into the second period. Jack Hughes would push New Jersey ahead 3-1 with a pair of goals 4:25 apart but the Rangers would pull a goal back just 3:31 later. The Devils restored the two-goal cushion with Miles Wood making it 4-2 with four minutes to play in the 2nd and although the Rangers made it interesting in the 3rd, scoring at the seven minute mark and outshooting the Devils 21-8 in the final period, the Rangers wouldn’t find the equalizer as New Jersey held on for the win. MacKenzie Blackwood got the win to improve to 2-0-1 on the year after stopping 47 of 50 shots faced in the winning effort.

The New York Islanders will be out to build on 1 -0 win over the Boston Bruins in their last outing. The game was scoreless through the opening 20 minutes and stayed tied at zero after the 2nd period, and 0-0 remained up until Jean-Gabriel Pageau gave the Isles the lead with 4:09 to go in the 3rd and despite their best efforts, Boston couldn’t find the game-tying goal, leaving the Bruins without a point to show for their work with New York taking home the win. Semyon Varlamov picked up his 2nd win of the season by also acquiring his 2nd shutout of the year, stopping 27 of 27 shots faced in the winning effort.

New Jersey is 22-57 in their last 79 games against a team with a winning record and 20-45 in their last 65 Thursday games while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 road games. New York is 5-2 in their last 7 games as a home favorite and 0-5 in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 5-0-1 in their last 6 games overall. New Jersey is 2-10 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams in New York.

The head-to-head trends here would suggest that the Devils are in for a long night and that’s they’ll be leaving without a win. However, both of these teams have come out strong to start the year, and while the Islanders are gritty and well-coached, New Jersey has come out of the gates flying and with this plus money, they’re worth the shot. I’ll take a stab at New Jersey in this one.
