The Buffalo Sabres and the Washington Capitals meet in NHL action from the Capital One Arena on Sunday.
The Buffalo Sabres will look to bounce back from a 4-3 shootout loss to Washington last time out. Taylor Hall and Jack Eichel have the team-high with 6 points apiece, with Hall logging a goal and 5 assists while Eichel has a team-high 6 helpers. Victor Olofsson has 4 points coming on 2 goals and 2 assists while Curis Lazar and Sam Reinhart each have 2 goals and an assist for their 3 points this year. Carter Hutton’s started 3 games for Buffalo with a 1-2 record and 7 goals allowed on 69 shots against for his 2.65 GAA while Linus Ullmark has a 2.44 GAA with 5 goals against on 53 shots against for a 2.44 GAA this season.
The Washington Capitals will look to pull off another short-handed upset after their win over Buffalo last time out. Tom Wilson has a team-high 6 points coming on 3 goals and 3 assists while Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Jakub Vrana and T.J. Oshie each have 5 points with Backstrom and Vrana logging 3 goals and 2 assists while Ovechkin and Oshie have a goal and 4 helpers each. Vitek Vanecek has a 2-1 record with a 2.90 GAA, allowing 9 goals on 88 shots against in his 3 starts this year while Ilya Samsonov has a 3.36 GAA in his 2 starts.
Buffalo is 2-10 in their last 12 games overall and 15-50 in their last 65 road games while the under is 5-1-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record. 1-7 in their last 8 games following a win and 10-3 in their last 13 Sunday games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Buffalo is 7-19 in the last 26 meetings between these two teams and 4-17 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams in Washington.
I’m not about to lay juice with the Buffalo Sabres, one, because they’re on the road and two, they’ve done nothing to warrant being favored even if Washington is in fact short-handed. On the other hand, I can’t trust the Capitals without Ovechkin or any of the other players that are scratched for this game as that’s just a lot of talent to be without, which is why I’m siding with the under. Like I said, Washington’s lost a lot of it’s offensive punch and Buffalo just lacks a punch to begin with so I’ll back a low-scoring game here.
