The New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers meet in NHL action from Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
The New Jersey Devils finally get back on the ice for the first time since January 31st after a COVID layoff, making their 5-3 win over Buffalo the last game action that we’ve seen from the Devils. Miles Wood, Ty Smith and Jack Hughes all have 8 points to lead the Devils, with Wood posting a team-high 5 goals with 3 assists while Smith has a team-high 6 assists with a pair of goals and Hughes has 3 goals and 5 helpers. Pavel Zacha, Damon Severson, Michael McLeod and Nathan Bastian all have 4 points with McLeod posting 3 goals while Zacha and Bastian each have 3 assists and Zacha has the best of both with 2 goals and 2 assists on the year. Scott Wedgewood’s seen the bulk of the starts in goal for New Jersey with a win and a shutout with a 2.80 GAA in 5 appearances.
The New York Rangers will try to snap a three-game losing streak after a 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins in their last matchup. Artemi Panarin leads the Rangers in scoring with 15 points coming on 5 goals with 10 assists while Pavel Buchnevich has 8 points with 3 goals and 5 assists and Adam Fox has 7 points with 6 assists. Dylan Strome’s got 6 points with 4 goals and a pair of assists and Phil Di Giuseppe also has 5 assists for New York this season. Igor Shesterkin’s seen the bulk of the work in goal for New York, grabbing 3 wins with a 2.16 GAA in 9 appearances this season.
New Jersey is 7-3 in their last 10 games against a team with a losing record and 5-23 in their last 28 Tuesday games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 road games. New York is 3-8 in their last 11 home games and 4-13 in their last 17 games overall while the under is 10-2 in their last 12 games as a favorite. The over is 17-6-6 in the last 29 meetings between these two teams and 5-0-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in New York.
I get the case that could be made for either side here as New Jersey had actually been playing fairly well prior to their layoff and I’m not trying to lay this kind of juice with the Rangers, even at home. On the flipside, there’s bound to be some rust for the Devils, so it’s just a matter of how long it takes the Devils to shake it off at game speed. Instead of trying to narrow down a side, I’m going to back the over. I just think that even with tired and rusty legs for the Devils, New York’s goaltending has been so unreliable that you can probably expect a couple of goals from the Devils while New York’s bound to take advantage of New Jersey’s fatigue and pot a couple of their own. Give me the over.
