The New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs meet in NHL action from Scotiabank Arena on Monday night.

The New York Rangers will look to build on their first win of the year coming in the from of a 3-1 win over Montreal last time out. The first period went scoreless before Chris Kreider broke the deadlock just before the midway point of the second period. The goal would hold until Montreal tied the game at one at the 9:24 mark of the 3rd, but Alexis Lafreniere would restore New York’s lead just :26 later. Kevin Rooney iced the win for the Rangers with an empty-netter with just ten seconds to go in the game. Igor Shesterkin got the win after stopping 31 of 32 shots faced to improve to 1-0-1 on the year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be out to add to their 3-1 win over Ottawa in their last game. Wayne Simmonds got Toronto on the board first just 2:12 into the game before Alex Kerfoot doubled the lead just under six minutes later. Ottawa got on the board with the lone goal of the second period late in the middle frame but Michael Bunting would restore the two-goal cushion just under eight minutes into the third period and Toronto wouldn’t look back. Jack Campbell got the win in goal to improve to 2-0-0 on the year after stopping 20 of 21 shots faced in the win.

New York is 9-25 in their last 34 games as an underdog and 2-7 in their last 9 games overall while the under is 15-5-3 in their last 23 games as a road underdog. Toronto is 13-5 in their last 18 games following a win and 7-3 in their last 10 home games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games as a favorite.

This is an interesting matchup and it’s hard to predict as Gerard Gallant’s said he’s going to wait until close to game time to reveal a starter if at all but going off of what we’ve seen so far, I’m leaning towards the Maple Leafs here. They’ll be getting Auston Matthews back for this game which will be a lift to the team’s morale and they’ve been playing well as it is. New York’s been disappointing in my opinion so far this season and I just need to see more before I back them in these kinds of spots. Give me the Leafs here.
