The Washington Capitals and the Florida Panthers meet in game one of their first round NHL playoff series from the FLA Live Arena on Tuesday night.

The Washington Capitals come into the playoffs as one of the two wild card spots with a record of 44-26-12 this year. Alex Ovechkin leads the Caps in scoring with 90 points including a team-high 50 goals and 40 assists while Evgeny Kuznetsov has 78 points with 54 assists. Tom Wilson has 52 points with 24 goals and 28 assists and John Carlson’s got 71 points with 17 goals and 54 apples. Ilya Samsonov has gone 23-12-5 with a 3.02 GAA and an .896 save percentage for the Caps while Vitek Vanecek is 20-12-6 with a 2.67 GAA and a .908 save percentage.

The Florida Panthers will come in as the Atlantic division champion, winning the President’s trophy as well with a record of 58-18-6 as well this season. Jonathan Huberdeau leads the Panthers in scoring with 115 points including a team-high 85 assists while Sam Reinhart has 82 points, logging 33 goals and 49 assists. Aleksander Barkov has a team-high 39 goals as well as 88 points for Florida this season. Sergei Bobrovsky’s gone 39-7-3 with a 2.67 GAA and a .913 save percentage between the pipes for Florida while Spencer Knight is 19-9-3 with a 2.89 GAA and an .908 save percentage this season.

Washington is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 8-4 in their last 12 road games while the over is 17-8 in their last 25 games overall. Florida is 14-3 in their last 17 games overall and 11-1 in their last 12 home games while the over is 16-8 in their last 24 home games.

I get the reasoning for backing either side here, but I’m looking at the over in this one. We all know the potency the Panthers have on offense, but let’s not forget we’re talking about the Capitals here with Alex Ovechkin in the playoffs. Ovi is one of the NHL’s greatest goalscorers, but also has a ton of talent alongside him and I think this is one of those games that hits 7 plus goals as all of the meetings between these two in the regular season did as well.
