The Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers meet in NHL opening night action from Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

The Tampa Bay Lightning begin the quest back to regain the Stanley Cup after a 2021-22 season where the Bolts finished 51-23-8, earning a playoff berth and taking out Toronto in seven games, sweeping Florida and beating these same Rangers in six before falling in six games to the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup finals. A lot of the usual suspects return for Tampa Bay, like Steven Stamkos who led the Bolts with 106 points and 42 goals las season as well as Victor Hedman who had 85 points with 65 assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy is also back after going 39-18-5 with a 2.49 GAA and a .916 save percentage last season.

The New York Rangers come into the 2022-23 season looking to take more steps forward after a successful 2021-22 season where the Rangers finished 52-24-6, earning their spot in the postseason and winning back-to-back seven game series against Pittsburgh and Carolina before bowing out to Tampa Bay in the conference finals. The bulk of New York’s core is in tact, with Artemi Panarin back after leading the Rangers with 96 points and 74 assists while Chris Kreider returns after a 52-goal campaign. Mika Zibanejad returns after logging 81 points with 29 goals and 52 apples and Adam Fox anchors the blue line after putting up 63 assists last year. Igor Shesterkin remains the stalwart in goal for the Rangers, going 36-13-4 with a 2.07 GAA and a .935 save percentage and a Vezina trophy last season.

Tampa Bay is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the Metropolitan division and 36-17 in their last 53 Tuesday games while the under is 10-1 in their last 11 games against the Eastern Conference. New York is 35-16 in their last 51 home games and 0-4 in their last 4 games against the Atlantic division while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall.

I get the case to be made either way in this game, but I’m leaning towards the under here. I think this is going to be an adjustment to life back at game speed and these adjustments are being made with two of the NHL’s best goaltenders minding the crease in Andrei Vasilevskiy and Igor Shesterkin. This has 2-1 or 3-2 written all over it in my opinion, so give me the under here.
