The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets meet in NHL action from Canada Life Arena on Saturday night.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to build on their 3-2 start on the year after a 3-2 overtime win over the Dallas Stars last time out. Morgan Rielly, William Nylander and John Tavares each have a team-high 5 points with Rielly logging 5 assists while Tavares has 4 assists and Nylander has a team-high 3 goals and 2 assists. Mitch Marner and Michael Bunting each have 4 points with a goal and 3 assists and Auston Matthews has 3 points with a pair of assists. Nick Robertson also has a pair of goals as well this season. Ilya Samsonov is 3-0 with a 1.96 GAA and a .927 save percentage this season in goal for Toronto.
The Winnipeg Jets will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last four games following a 5-2 loss to Vegas last time out, dropping to 2-2 on the year as a result. Neal Pionk has a team-high 4 points and 3 goals while Nikolaj Ehlers, Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey, Cole Perfetti and Pierre-Luc Dubois each have 3 points with Perfetti and Dubois each having a goal and 2 assists while Ehlers and Morrissey each have 3 assists and Scheifele also has 3 goals of his own this season. Connor Hellebuyck has gone 2-1 with a 2.66 GAA and a .922 save percentage while David Rittich is 0-1 with a 4.23 GAA and an .871 save percentage between the pipes for Winnipeg this season.
I get the reasoning for backing either side here, but I’m looking at the over in this one. The Jets usually get solid goaltending from their netminder but the meetings between Toronto and Winnipeg are usually high-scoring and I’m not 100% sold on either of these teams defensively in the early going this season. I think we’re headed for another 7-goal game at the very least here, so give me the over in this one.
