On Saturday night at the Stubhub Center in California, Gary Russell Jr. will put his undefeated record on the line when he clashes with Vasyl Lomachenko. This should be a terrific fight between two of the top up and comers in the sport and the winner walks away with the vacant WBO Featherweight title.

Russell enters this match with an impressive 24-0 record, which includes a victory over Miguel Tamayo earlier this year. He’s quickly climbing the ranks and becoming one of the best young boxers in the world at 26 years old. Russell’s strength is his extreme quickness, as he has some of the fastest hands you’re going to see. He’s also a fluid puncher with above-average power. However, Russell can sometimes open himself up to crushing blows and really hasn’t faced a skilled boxer who can take advantage of his shaky footwork.

Lomachenko built a name for himself in the Olympics by winning back-to-back gold medals in Beijing and London. He also racked up an impressive 396-1 record as an amateur boxer. Just turning professional last year, Lomachenko is 1-1, as his win came against Jose Ramirez, and his loss was just a couple of months ago against Orlando Salido. Lomachenko is a fighter who does just about everything well, but specializes in terrific defense and footwork. He’s a highly intelligent fighter who lets the fight come to him and doesn’t try to do too much. Lomachenko’s weakness would be his lack of experience at the professional level, as fighting an experienced boxer such as Russell could be costly if he isn’t careful.

This is an intriguing matchup that will likely go the distance. And while it could go either way, I think Russell’s quickness and experience will make the difference. Lomachenko has the better overall skill set, but he’s never faced somebody with the quick hands of Russell. It’ll be tough to keep up and the undefeated American will have plenty of chances to land some haymakers.

Not to mention Russell has been waiting for a matchup that will take his resume to the next level. He’s got it and won’t disappoint.
