Maurice Hooker and Jose Carlos Ramirez fight Saturday at the College Park Center for the World Boxing Council World Super Lightweight Title.

Maurice Hooker enters this fight with a 26-0-3 record that includes 17 knockouts. Hooker has won 10 of his last 11 fights, and he’s coming off a March win over Mikkel LesPierre. Hooker is riding a five-fight winning streak since his 2016 draw against Darleys Perez and will be defending his belt for the third time. Hooker is just now starting to improve his resume with more notable names, and a win here would certainly put him in the conversation as one of the best super lightweights in the world. Hooker is 29 years old, stands at 5’11”, has a 80-inch reach and an orthodox stance. Hooker is a rangy fighter who puts his punches together nicely and has a strong right hand that’s helped him finish six of his last 12 fights. The problem is Hooker can be a bit stiff when he fights, as he doesn’t move his feet much and he gets hit far too often. A fighter this lengthy should not be trading punches as much as he does and it makes his fights often tough to judge, which is why a few of his bouts have either been draws or split decisions. Hooker must do a better job of using his frame to his advantage rather than relying on raw skills. This will be Hooker’s first career fight in Texas, his birth state.

Jose Carlos Ramirez enters this fight with a 24-0 record that includes 16 knockouts. This will be Ramirez’s fourth fight since 2018, and he’s coming off a February win over Jose Zepeda. Ramirez is another fighter who has recently taken on bigger names and has quickly put himself in the conversation for best within the division, and he’ll be defending his belt for the third time. Ramirez is coming off a majority decision and each of his last three bouts have gone to the judges. Ramirez is 26 years old, stands at 5’10”, has a 72-inch reach and an orthodox stance. Ramirez is simply a brawler in the ring, as his work rate is second to none, he has fast hands and good footwork. Ramirez wastes no time letting his hands go with powerful combinations, and he loves working the body where he ends a lot of his fights with a devastating liver shot. Don’t let recent decisions fool you, Ramirez has legit punching power and an aggressive offensive style that can be tough to match. This will be Ramirez’s fourth career fight in Texas.

Hooker has a legit advantage in this fight given the massive size advantage and an eight-inch reach edge. The problem is Hooker doesn’t use his size to his advantage most fights, and he rather box from the inside and trade punches. That’s not going to fly against somebody like Ramirez, who has a wild style and is looking for the kill once he gets comfortable offensively. If Hooker fought smart, he’d have a chance in this fight, but his current style is not going to work against this pitbull with a high work rate who relentlessly attacks the body.

Ramirez gives Hooker his first career loss.

Pick:
Jose Carlos Ramirez -138
