The Montreal Alouettes and Edmonton Eskimos meet Friday in CFL action at Commonwealth Stadium.
The Montreal Alouettes have nowhere to go but up after just five wins last season, but they may have more questions than before with the firing of Mike Sherman last week. Khari Jones will now takeover head coaching duties on top of being the offensive coordinator. Maybe it was the right decision, but it’s one that could have been made months ago if it was going to be made. The Alouettes were dead last in yards allowed and yards gained last season, so it shouldn’t take much for this group to be considered an improvement. The first goal for Montreal should be to find a quarterback, as this tam had six players last year with at least 30 pass attempts. Fix that issue and everything else should fall in line for the Alouettes. The Montreal Alouettes have lost five of their last seven road games.
The Edmonton Eskimos hope things are better in the second year under coach Jason Maas after finishing with a .500 record and missing the playoffs. Edmonton has a new quarterback in Trevor Harris, who has thrown for over 18,000 yards and 104 touchdowns in seven seasons with Toronto and Ottawa. He’ll be asked to lead what was an explosive offense last year but lost its top-the receivers from a year ago. The Eskimos do return their explosive running back in CJ Gable, who is fresh off his best season with over 1,000 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Larry Dean is back as the Eskimos top tackler from last year, Kwaku Boateng had nine sacks and Anthony Orange had five interceptions. The Edmonton Eskimos have won six of their last seven home games.
The Alouettes are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games, 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Friday games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Eskimos are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games in Week 1, 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games in June and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Friday games. The Alouettes are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 meetings and the over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings. The over is 6-1 in Eskimos last 7 Friday games. The under is 13-6 in Alouettes last 19 games overall.
The Montreal Alouettes have covered six of their last eight games as a double-digit underdog. The Edmonton Eskimos have failed to cover seven of their last eight games as a double-digit favorite. While those trends probably lead you toward the free points, it's tough to remove the struggle Montreal had last season from your brain. It was bad. The Edmonton Eskimos have also been one of the key teams that have treated the Alouettes like a punching bag over the years, and that includes winning the last three meetings by an average of 18.3 points. I hate big chalk early in the season when it's still a feeling out process, but this could be another ugly game.
