The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats meet Thursday in CFL action at Tim Hortons Field.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are coming off an impressive 12-win season that included a playoff berth and a West semifinal exit. Saskatchewan will have a new head coach this season, as Craig Dickenson goes from being the special teams coach to leading a team for the first time in his career. Zach Collaros returns at quarterback after throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Emmanuel Arceneaux and Naaman Roosevelt provide a reliable 1-2 option at wide receiver. Defensively, Mike Edem returns to the Roughriders as the leading tackler, Charleston Hughes is back after 15 sacks and Nick Marshall had three interceptions. Saskatchewan allowed the fewest yards per game last season and should be able to remain a consistent unit with its top players back. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have won five of their last six road games.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats finished the regular season under .500 but managed to sneak into the playoffs and make it to the East Final. Orlondo Steinauer will also be the head for the first time in his career, as he was the assistant coach a year ago. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli hopes to build on a season where he threw for over 5,000 yards and led a Tiger-Cats offense that averaged the most yards per game. Hamilton also returns its top-three wide receivers in Brandon Banks, Luke Tasker and Mike Jones. Simoni Lawrence returns to Hamilton as the leading tackler, Ted Laurent is back after eight sacks and Rico Murray had five interceptions. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have lost three of their last four home games.
The Roughriders are 35-16 ATS in their last 51 games in Week 1. The Tiger-Cats are 7-16-2 ATS in their last 25 home games, 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Roughriders are 28-10-1 ATS in their last 39 meetings and the under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings. The over is 5-1 in Tiger-Cats last 6 games overall. The under is 3-1-1 in Roughriders last 5 games overall.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have won each of the last five games against the Tiger-Cats and enter this season probably as the more balanced team. However, if the Tiger-Cats are going to have that breakthrough they're looking for and look to build on last years success, they have to do a better job of beating the quality teams and showing up big at home. There's no better time than a season opener to send an early message to the rest of the league. With a lot of key players back and an offense that really started to click, I like the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to start things off with a solid victory.
