Akron Zips -4 -- Over/Under: 134
The Northern Illinois Huskies and the Akron Zips meet in college basketball MAC-tion from the James A. Rhodes Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Northern Illinois Huskies come into this one looking to string some consistency together after splitting their last 4 outings after a 77-75 win over Buffalo in their last outing. Dante Thorpe led the Huskies with 23 points on 7 of 8 shooting with an 8 of 10 mark from the foul line and 3 steals while Eugene German added 20 points along with 10 rebounds for the double-double as the only other Northern Illinois player to score in double figures in the winning effort. German leads the Huskies with an average of 20.6 points and 2.9 assists per game while James leads Northern Illinois in rebounding with 7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Northern Illinois is averaging 77.9 points per game on 49.9% shooting from the field, 37.1% from behind the arc and 70.4% from the foul line this season.
The Akron Zips will also be looking for some consistency after splitting their last 16 games and alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games following a 70-67 win over Central Michigan in their last outing. Tyler Cheese led the Zips with 20 points along with a team-high 12 rebounds for the double-double while Jimond Ivey added 15 points and a team-high 4 assists. Loren Cristian Jackson added 12 points and a pair of steals to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for Akron in the winning effort. Deng Riak added 6 points with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks while Daniel Utomi was held scoreless, missing all 9 of his field goal attempts, including 0 for 7 from behind the arc. Despite the off night, Utomi still leads Akron in scoring with 14.1 points per game while Jimond Ivey leads the Zips with averages of 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Akron is averaging 71.3 points per game on 41.9% shooting from the field, 31.5% from behind the arc and 69.8% from the foul line this season.
Northern Illinois is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Akron is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. The home team is 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Neither of these two teams have been anything to write home about lately in terms of consistency, however putting the two side by side with recent trends, I think we are getting points with the more consistent of the two teams here in Northern Illinois. The Huskies have been much stronger ATS both overall and against the rest of the MAC while Akron has failed to cover in any of their last 6 games overall. That could mean that the Zips are due to cover one here, but I think Northern Illinois has too much going for them, so much so that I think the Huskies have a good chance at winning this one outright, but I’ll take the points just to be safe.
