The Alcorn State Braves and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs meet in SWAC college basketball action from the Elmore Gymnasium on Monday night.
The Alcorn State Braves will be looking to pick up their first road win of the year after a 74-59 loss to Alabama State in their last outing. Troymain Crosby led the Braves with 18 points while Reginal Johnson and Maurice Howard each had 12 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Alcorn State in the loss with Howard dishing out a team-high 5 assists in addition to leading the Braves with 3 steals. Devon Brewer added 5 points along with a team-high 7 rebounds as well in the losing effort for the Braves. Howard leads Alcorn State with an average of 13.2 points and 3.8 assists per game while DeShaw Andrews leads the Braves in rebounding with 5.3 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Alcorn State is averaging 64.5 points per game on 39.7% shooting from the field, 32.6% from behind the arc and 67.9% from the foul line this season.
The Alabama A&M Bulldogs will be looking to build some momentum after picking up just their 3rd win of the season in a 68-62 win over Southern last time out. Andre Kennedy led the Bulldogs with 26 points on 11 of 15 shooting with 10 rebounds and a pair of steals for the double-double while Tre Todd added 14 points and Jalen Reeder chipped in 11 points to round out Alabama A&M’s trio of double-digit scorers in the winning effort. Brandon Miller added a team-high 4 assists as well in the victory for Alabama A&M. Kennedy leads the Bulldogs with an average of 11 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while Miller leads Alabama A&M in assists with 3.7 assists per game this season. As a team, Alabama A&M is averaging 59.6 points per game on 39.2% shooting from the field, 31.1% from behind the arc and 59.9% from the foul line this season.
Alcorn State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the under is 10-4 in their last 14 games overall. Alabama A&M is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a win and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Monday games while the under is 15-3 in their last 18 home games.
It's hard to get a gauge on either of these teams with how little we tend to see of the SWAC. However, while Alabama A&M has been solid after the rare occurrence of a win, it's still hard to lay points with a team that's won just 3 out of 20 games, even at home. Alcorn State has won the last 6 meetings against the Bulldogs both home and away by at least 4 points, including a 20-point win on the road last season. Based on the history between these two teams, I'll take Alcorn State and the points in a game the Braves could win outright once again.
