The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Alabama Crimson Tide meet in SEC college basketball action from the Coleman Coliseum on Saturday evening.
The Vanderbilt Commodores will be eager to fins their first conference win of the year to snap a 14-game losing streak after a 58-46 loss to Tennessee last time out. Aaron Nesmith led Vanderbilt with 13 points on 5 of 14 shooting with 3 threes as the only Commodore to score in double figures in the losing effort. Saben Lee added 8 points with team-highs of 9 rebounds and 5 assists while Simisola Shittu chipped in 9 points with 6 rebounds and Yanni Wetzell had 4 steals. Lee leads Vanderbilt with an average of 12.9 points and 3.8 assists per game while Shittu leads the Commodores in rebounding with 6.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Vanderbilt is averaging 71.1 points per game on 42.9% shooting from the field, 32.7% from behind the 3-point line and 68.4% from the foul line this season.
The Alabama Crimson Tide will look to snap a 3-game losing streak after a 65-56 loss to Texas A&M in their last outing. Tevin Mack led the Tide with 14 points and a pair of steals as the only Alabama player to score in double figures in the losing effort. John Petty chipped in 7 points and a team-high 6 rebounds while Kira Lewis Jr. had 5 points and a team-high 4 assists. As a team, Alabama is averaging 73.7 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 33.9% from behind the arc and 68.2% from the foul line this season.
Vanderbilt is 18-39 ATS in their last 57 games overall and 14-34 ATS in their last 48 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 conference games. Alabama is 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 home games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Vanderbilt is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at Alabama and the road team is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams overall.
I’ll concede the obvious that Vanderbilt has been a tough and frustrating team to try to figure out this season, and while I think that Alabama should be favored here, I’m not sure that the Tide should be near double-digit favorites on a 3-game losing streak against a Vanderbilt team that’s had their number ATS in their own venue over the years. Add in the fact that the road team has dominated this matchup, and I’ll take a shot with Vanderbilt and the points here.
