The Texas Southern Tigers and the Arizona State Sun Devils meet in college basketball action from the Wells-Fargo Arena on Saturday night.
The Texas Southern Tigers come into this game looking for a big road win to build on back-to-back victories following up their massive upset of Oregon with an 81-76 win over subdivision Huston-Tillotson in their last outing. Devocio Bruce led the Tigers with 21 points on 6 of 10 shooting with 3 threes while Jeremy Combs came 2nd with 18 points. Trayvon Reed added 14 points with 7 rebounds while Justin Hopkins chipped in 11 points with a team-high 8 rebounds to round out the foursome of double-digit scorers for the Tigers in the win. John Jones scored just 2 points but dished out a team-high 7 assists as well in the winning effort for Texas Southern. Jalyn Patterson leads the Tigers in scoring and assists with 15.2 points and 4.7 assists per game while the aforementioned Reed leads Texas Southern in rebounding, averaging a double-double per game with 13.8 points and a team-high 10.3 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Texas Southern is averaging 72.7 points per game on 37.9% shooting from the field, 28% from behind the 3-point line and 69.6% from the foul line this season.
The Arizona State Sun Devils will look to pick up another win to remain unbeaten after climbing to 6-0 on the year with an 89-71 win over Nebraska-Omaha in their last outing. Taeshhon Cherry and Luguentz Dort tied for the team-high with 19 points, with Dort adding 4 assists and 3 steals while Cherry shot 8 of 12 from the floor with 3 threes. Kimani Lawrence added 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting with 4 threes, 5 assists and a pair of steals and blocks while Zylan Cheatham fell one assist shy of a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists to round out the double-digit scoring for ASU in the win. De’Quon Lake added 9 points and 11 rebounds of his own in the winning effort for the Sun Devils. Dort leads Arizona State in scoring with 22.3 points per game while Cheatham leads the Sun Devils in rebounding and assists with 9 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game this season. As a team, Arizona State is averaging 86.7 points per game on 46.4% shooting from the field, 37.2% from behind the arc and 68.8% from the foul line this season.
Texas Southern is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a win and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall while the over is 15-5-1 in their last 21 non-conference games. Arizona State is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games while the under is 7-3-1 in their last 11 Saturday games.
This game is a little bit tricky as the Tigers have shown that they're capable of hanging around and even pulling off an upset (just ask Oregon). However, I feel that Arizona State is in a better place offensively right now, and that the Sun Devils have been solid ATS to start the year so I'll lay the points with Arizona State, but in all fairness this one may be a game to leave alone with better options on the board for Saturday's lineup.
