The Utah Utes and the Arizona State Sun Devils meet in Pac-12 conference college basketball action from the Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday night.
The Utah Utes will look to bounce back after an 86-71 loss to Nevada at home in their last outing. Sedrick Barefield led the Utes with 33 points on 10 of 15 shooting with 6 threes and a 7 of 9 mark from the foul line while Donnie Tillman added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Timmy Allen added 11 points to round out the scoring in double figures for the Utes in the losing effort. Novak Topalovic added 6 rebounds as well in the loss for Utah. Barefield leads Utah with an average of 15 points and 3.2 assists per game while Tillman leads the Utes on the glass with 6.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Utah is averaging 73.5 points per game on 46.1% shooting from the field, 35.8% from behind the arc and 73.3% from the foul line this season.
The Arizona State Sun Devils will look to bounce back after a 67-66 upset loss to Princeton in their last outing. Remy Martin led the Sun Devils with 19 points on 7 of 18 shooting while Romello White came right behind with 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting with 11 rebounds and 3 blocks for the double-double. Rob Edwards added 11 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Arizona State in the losing effort. Zylan Cheatham added 4 points with 9 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists while Luguentz Dort chipped in 6 points to match his 6 rebounds in the loss. Dort leads Arizona State in scoring with 18.1 points per game while Cheatham leads the Sun Devils by averaging a double-double per game with 11.3 points to go along with team-highs of 10.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this season. As a team, Arizona State is averaging 79.7 points per game on 43.2% shooting from the field, 32.5% from behind the arc and 68.4% from the foul line this season.
Utah is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 conference games. Arizona State is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 home games against a team with a losing road record. Utah is 12-0-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings between these two teams and 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams at Arizona State.
This is a lot of points to lay considering that Arizona State has been solid at home and will want to atone for their loss to Princeton last time out. Utah has also been brutal ATS as of late and has struggled against teams with a winning record. However, the Utes have downright owned Arizona State for the last few years, both overall and in the Sun Devils’ backyard. Sometimes, head to head trends play a part in making a pick, but when the trends are as dominant as the ones that Utah has against Arizona State, like it or not, sometimes one team just has another team’s number. I’ll take a shot with Utah and the points to keep this one within single digits.
