The Line: Auburn Tigers -20 -- Over/Under: 156.5
The South Alabama Jaguars and Auburn Tigers meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the Auburn Arena.
The South Alabama Jaguars have a new head coach in Richie Riley, who won 35 games in two years at Nicholls State and was a Clemson assistant before that for a couple of years. While coaching changes are never easy to transition through, there’s a lot of promise with South Alabama this season, as it returns its top-five scorers from a year ago. Rodrick Sikes and Josh Ajayi is one of the better 1-2 punches in the Sun Belt, while Herb McGee and Trhae Mitchell provide quality depth to make this an explosive offensive club. Also, the Jaguars get a boost with the transfer of Kory Holden, who spent a couple of seasons at Delaware and was a consistent double-digit scorer. The South Alabama Jaguars have the potential to be a surprise team this season and end up in some sort of postseason tournament. The South Alabama Jaguars have lost 13 of their last 14 road games.
The Auburn Tigers are fresh off winning their first NCAA Tournament game since 2003, and the expectations have increased. Auburn will finally see Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy on the court this season after they missed all of last year due to off the court investigations. Purifoy and Wiley were expected to be two of the better players on the roster last season. Auburn also returns double-digit scorers in Bryce Brown and Jared Harper, guys who shot well from three and combined for 7.1 assists per game. Auburn has the talent to make a run at an SEC title this season, but it really comes down to discipline and not making the foolish errors down the stretch that separates talented teams from the real contenders. Regardless, Auburn has the ability to be a legit threat this season if everything goes well. The Auburn Tigers have won 15 of their last 16 home games.
The Jaguars are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games, 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 road games and 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The under is 4-0 in Tigers last 4 overall and the over is 9-4 in Jaguars last 13 road games.
The Auburn Tigers have the talent to be a force in the SEC this season and return to the big dance with true expectations. However, it's the first game of the season and laying this much chalk this early is risky. There's rust and guys are just getting in the swing of things. The South Alabama Jaguars are also a pretty good Sun Belt team with players who can fill it up. I'll take the points here.
