The Baylor Bears face instate rival the Texas Southern Tigers to begin the college basketball season Tuesday.

The Texas Southern Tigers kickoff 2018-19 with Johnny Jones taking over as head coach with high expectations. Texas Southern has been the team to beat in the SWAC and that’s the case once again.

The Tigers have leadership in the backcourt with Derrick Bruce bringing back nearly 14 points and 3.8 assists while guard Jalyn Patterson comes in from LSU and is expected to improve upon his 5.8 points and three assists with the Tigers.

The Texas Southern frontcourt returns 7-2 Trayvon Reed with 9.7 points and 8.7 rebounds from a season ago. North Texas transfer Jeremy Combs gives the Tigers size at 6-7 and production after averaging 10.2 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Mean Green in 2016-17.

The Baylor Bears were not a threat in the Big-12 a season ago finishing with a 19-15. Baylor outscored opponents 75.6-69.7, shot the ball well at 46.9% and defended well allowing 41.5% shooting but the conference is overloaded with top notch talent.

The Bears lose their top four scorers with Manu Lecomte taking a team high 16.2 points to graduation while Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. taking 14 points and a team high 8.6 rebounds with him.

Guard Makai Mason gives the Bears a huge boost after averaging 16 points in 2015-16. Mario Kegler brings his 6-7 frame in from Mississippi State where he averaged 9.7 points and 5.5 boards. King McClure, Mark Vital and Tristan Clark know the system and will have expanded roles for the Bears in 2018-19.

Texas Southern  are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and  are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big 12. Over is 4-0 in Baylor last 4 overall and over is 4-0 in Baylor last 4 non-conference games.

The only thing Texas Southern can do here is try and score with Baylor...

I have been a sports fan since I was old enough to pick up a ball and have always been drawn to competition. I don't participate in sporting events any longer but I do like to provide my opinion on games and writing gives me that outlet. I won't always be right but I always put 100% in to every article I do whether it's the World Series or an 0-10 college football team. Mitch shares that same passion and allows me to express myself in my own way.
