The San Jose State Spartans and the Boise State Broncos meet in Mountain West conference college basketball action from the Taco Bell Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The San Jose State Spartans will be out to snap their current 12-game losing streak after a 67-56 loss to San Diego State in their last outing. Craig LeCesne led the Spartans with 15 points while Brae Ivey added 12 points with a pair of threes and a team-high 5 assists as the only other San Jose State player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Michael Steadman added 6 points with a team-high 11 rebounds and 4 assists as well in the loss. Steadman leads San Jose State with an average of 12.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while Ivey leads the Spartans in assists with 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, San Jose State is averaging 65.2 points per game on 40.7% shooting from the field, 33.2% from behind the arc and 66.7% from the foul line this season.
The Boise State Broncos could use a win after losing 5 of their last 7 games following an 83-72 loss to UNLV last time out. Derrick Alston led the Broncos with 17 points on 6 of 14 shooting with 3 threes while Alex Hobbs added 16 points with 5 rebounds and Justinian Jessup contributed 15 points with 5 boards of his own. Zach Haney added 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting in just 18 minutes on the floor to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Boise State in the losing effort. Jessup leads the Broncos with an average of 13.2 points and 2.4 assists per game while RJ Williams leads Boise State in rebounding with 5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Boise State is averaging 70.9 points per game on 47% shooting from the field, 33.9% from behind the arc and 71.2% from the foul line this season.
San Jose State is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 conference games. Boise State is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a double-digit loss at home while the under is 11-5-1 in their last 17 games against a team with a losing record. San Jose State is 7-20 ATS in the last 27 meetings between these two teams and 3-13 ATS in the last 16 meetings between these two teams at Boise State.
Boise State made me eat my words against UNLV as the Broncos just let the game get away from them. However, this seems like the perfect bounce back against a San Jose State team that the Broncos have flat out owned over the history of this matchup. By owned, I mean that the Broncos are 31-3 SU against the Spartans have won the last 4 meetings by an average of 15.7 points per game and have won 6 of the last 10 meetings by at least 21 points. I don’t want to lay this kind of number with Boise State, but the Spartans have lost by an average of 21.5 points per game in going 0-9 in conference play, including a 23-point loss to Boise State at home already this season. It’s Boise State or no play for me in this one.
