The Milwaukee Panthers will travel to the Silvio Conte Forum to take on the Boston College Eagles this upcoming Tuesday night in College Basketball action.
The Milwaukee Panthers finished last season with a 16-17 record (8-10 Horizon) however, the Panthers has as much roster turnover as any team in College Basketball this offseason as Milwaukee’s top three players in Jeremiah Bell (14.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.2 spg), Brock Stull (13.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.1 apg), and Bryce Nze (10.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.5 bpg) all decided to transfer this offseason. Milwaukee currently has just three remaining players led by Bryce Barnes (6.5 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.8 apg) and Carson Warren-Newsome (6.0 ppg, 1.9 rpg). Milwaukee struggled on the offensive end last season as they ranked just 294th in College Basketball and 2nd year coach Pat Baldwin will have to hope that Miami OH transfer Jake Wright and, Junior College transfer, Amir Allen, and freshman Shae Mitchell can all make immediate contributions. Milwaukee was a tough defensive team last season as they ranked T-71st in scoring defense however, the expectations can be that high for the Panthers on either side of the ball as they’ll be sporting an entirely new starting five.
The Boston College Eagles finished last season with a respectable 19-16 record while finishing ACC play with a 7-11 record. The Eagles earned the 12-seed in the ACC Tournament last season and although they upset the NC State Wolfpack in the first round, couldn’t advanced any further as they fell to the Clemson Tigers by a 90-82 margin. Boston College was invited to the NIT Tournament however, didn’t last long as they lost to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the 1st round. Boston College lost one of their top producers from last season in Jerome Robinson (20.7 ppg, 3.3 apg) however, the Eagles do return one of the better players in all of the ACC in Ky Bowman who averaged 17.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, & 4.7 apg last season. Boston College will have experience back in their starting five as Jordan Chatman (12.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.6 apg), Steffon Mitchell (6.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.1 apg), and Nik Popovic (9.9 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.3 apg) all return for the Eagles. The Eagles will hope that incoming 4-star freshman, Jairus Hamilton can make an immediate impact for Boston College in the frontcourt while freshman guard, Wynston Tabbs can provide some depth in the backcourt. Boston College will be a competitive team that certainly can give the heavyweights in the ACC some trouble, however, it’s going to be an uphill battle for the Eagles to make the NCAA Tournament this season.
The Panthers are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games however, just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games.
This is a large spread for a team like Boston College to cover however, I think it’s going to be a real struggle for Milwaukee this season as they just don’t have much experience and seem as of right now, don’t really have a playmaker on the offensive end. Ky Bowman should have a field day in this one on his home court and I expect the Eagles to pull away in the 2nd half and cover this spread.
