We have some non-conference action on the hardwood as the Idaho State Bengals take on the CSU-Northridge Matadors in a college basketball matchup on Saturday evening.
The Idaho State Bengals will look to rebound after having their 3 game winning streak snapped thanks to an 85-71 loss to BYU in their last outing. Novak Topalovic led the team with 16 points on 8 of 12 shooting while Geno Luzcando came right behind with 15 points and 10 assists for the double-double. Jared Stutzman added 11 points with a pair of steals to round out the scoring in double figures for the Bengals in the loss. Balint Mocsan added 4 points and a team-high 4 rebounds, while Jacob McCord added 4 boards of his own in the losing effort for Idaho State. Mocsan still leads the team in scoring with an average of 12.6 points per game, while Topalovic leads the team in rebounding with 5.3 boards per game and Luzcando is the team’s leading assist man with 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Idaho State is scoring 72.4 points per game on 44.8% shooting from the field, 36.7% from behind the arc and 68.6% from the foul line this season.
The CSU-Northridge Matadors could use a win to snap an awful 10 game losing skid after falling to 1-10 this season after a 66-61 loss to Sacramento State last time out. Tavrion Dawson led the team with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Micheal Warren added 11 points with a team-high 8 rebounds and a pair of blocks as the lone pair of Matadors to score in double figures in the loss. Warren, Terell Gomez, Lyrik Shreiner and Jalon Pipkins all had a team-high 3 assists in the losing effort for CSUN. Dawson leads the team in scoring with an average of 14.8 points per game, while Warren leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game and Gomez leads the way with 2.5 assists per game. As a team, CSU-Northridge is scoring 65.4 points per game on 42.7% shooting from the field, 34.9% from behind the arc and 65.8% from the foul line this season.
Idaho State is 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games against the Big West and 9-19 ATS in their last 28 games overall while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 non-conference games. CSU-Northridge is 4-21-1 ATS in their last 26 games following a loss and 10-25-1 ATS in their last 36 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 non-conference games.
The Bengals are winless on the road, which is hard to back in a pick ‘em situation like we have here. But the Matadors have lost 10 straight games. Something has to give here and normally I’d give an edge with home court, but that clearly hasn’t helped CSUN in any of their last 10 games, so I’ll take Idaho State to notch their first road win of the season in a pick ‘em.
