The USC Trojans and the Cal Golden Bears meet in Pac 12 college basketball action from the Haas Pavilion on Saturday night.
The USC Trojans will be out to snap a 3-game losing streak after falling to Stanford by a final score of 79-76 last time out. Bennie Boatwright led the Trojans with 19 points on 6 of 11 shooting with 6 rebounds and a pair of steals while Jonah Mathews chipped in 16 points with 3 threes and 3 assists. Nick Rakocevic added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double while Kevin Porter Jr. added 10 points to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for USC in the losing effort. Boatwright leads USC in scoring with an average of 17.7 points per game while Rakocevic leads the Trojans in rebounding with 9.8 rebounds per game and Derryck Thornton leads USC in assists with 4.7 helpers per game this season. As a team, USC is averaging 76.8 points per game on 45.8% shooting from the field, 37.3% from behind the arc and 66.4% from the foul line this season.
The Cal Golden Bears will be looking to snap a brutal 13-game losing streak after a 75-67 loss to UCLA in their last outing. Darius McNeill led Cal with 18 points on 6 of 14 shooting with 4 threes while Justice Sueing added 15 points with a team-high 7 rebounds and a pair of steals and Connor Vanover chipped in 12 points with 6 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Cal in the loss. Paris Austin added a team-high 4 assists as well in the defeat. Sueing leads Cal with an average of 14.9 points and 6 rebounds per game while Austin leads the Golden Bears in assists with 4.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Cal is averaging 69.9 points per game on 43.2% shooting from the field, 34.4% from behind the arc and 74.9% from the foul line this season.
USC is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games while the under is 20-6 in their last 26 conference games. Cal is 1-8 ATS in their last 9 home games and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games overall while the under is 19-9 in their last 28 conference games. USC is 14-6-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings between these two teams and 8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams at Cal.
USC laying points on the road is a tough proposition to stomach given the issues that the Trojans have had away from home this season. However, the fact that USC is favored by this many on the road just goes to speak to how bad of a basketball team Cal is. The Golden Bears for all intents and purposes should’ve won that game against UCLA after holding the lead most of the game, but the fact that the Bears lost just tells you that this is not a good basketball team. Add in the amount of success that the Trojans have had both overall and on the road, and I think you have to lay the points with USC in this one.
