The Line: Canisius Golden Griffins -6.5 -- Over/Under:
The Fairfield Stags will travel to the Koessler Athletic Center to take on the Canisius Golden Griffins this Monday night in College Basketball action.
The Fairfield Stags had their 3-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 10-14 (5-8 MAAC) on the season after being defeated by the Niagara Purple Eagles, 95-83, this past Saturday. Fairfield struggled defensively against the Purple Eagles and couldn’t fight back after Niagara took an 87-67 lead with 5:11 left in regulation. Fairfield allowed Niagara to shoot 51.4% from the field and 50.0% (8-16) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Stags was Aidas Kavaliauskas who had 14 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, Fairfield is averaging 75.5 ppg on 44.1% shooting from the field. The Stags are averaging 9.2 three-pointers per game on 33.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Fairfield has been led by Tyler Nelson (21.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.3 spg), Ferron Flavors Jr. (11.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.0 apg), Jesus Cruz (9.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.5 spg), and Aidas Kavaliauskas (6.4 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.5 spg). Defensively, Fairfield is allowing their opponents to average 78.1 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Stags have a rebound margin of -3.2 and a turnover margin of 0.5.
The Canisius Golden Griffins won their 4th straight game and improved to 17-9 (11-2 MAAC) on the season after defeating the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 71-64, this past Saturday. Canisius was solid on the defensive end against the Bobcats and pulled away in the 2nd half after taking a 62-48 lead with 3:48 left in regulation. Canisius held Quinnipiac to 29.6% (8-27) shooting from beyond the arc and won the turnover battle by a 16-7 margin. Leading the way for the Golden Griffins was Isaiah Reese who had a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds 7 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, Canisius is averaging 74.5 ppg on 45.9% shooting from the field. The Golden Griffins are averaging 9.1 three-pointers per game on 34.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Canisius has been led by Jermaine Crumpton (16.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.6 apg), Isaiah Reese (16.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 4.9 apg, 2.3 spg), Takal Molson (12.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.0 spg), and Malik Johnson (7.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.3 spg). Defensively, Canisius is allowing their opponents to average 70.2 ppg on 44.4% shooting from the field. The Golden Griffins have a rebound margin of -0.9 and a turnover margin of 1.6.
The Stags are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Golden Griffins are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 home games vs. a team with a losing road record and 10-2-1 ATS in their last 13 home games.
Fairfield has won 4 of their last 7 games led by their offense that ranks 133rd in scoring offense, however, the Stags have struggled defensively throughout the season and come into this game ranked just 307th in scoring defense and 270th in defensive FG%. Canisius has won 8 of their last 9 games and have been solid on both ends of the court this season as the Golden Griffins rank 163rd in scoring offense and 127th in scoring defense. Fairfield is just 2-9 on the road this season and as I think the Canisius defense will be able to slow down the Stags offense at home, I’m taking Canisius to cover this home spread.
