The Monmouth Hawks and the Canisius Golden Griffins meet in college basketball MAAC-tion from the Koessler Athletic Center on Thursday night.
The Monmouth Hawks come into this game looking to add to their current 4-game winning streak after picking up an 83-81 win over Iona in their last outing. Ray Salnave led the Hawks with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting while Deion Hammond added 15 points including a 9 of 9 mark from the foul line along with 5 rebounds while Sam Ibiezugbe added 12 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Monmouth in the winning effort. Salnave leads the Hawks with an average of 13 points and 2.8 assists per game while Mustapha Traore leads Monmouth in rebounding with 5.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Monmouth is averaging 64.7 points per game on 40.7% shooting from the field, 28.5% from behind the 3-point line and 69.7% from the foul line this season.
The Canisius Golden Griffins will be looking to build on back-to-back wins after a 73-68 win over Fairfield in their last outing. Jibreel Faulkner led the Griffins with 16 points, not missing a single shot, going a perfect 6 of 6 from the floor including a pair of threes and a couple of threes throws. Isaiah Reese came 2nd, flirting with a triple double with 15 points along with team-highs of 9 rebounds and 7 assists while Malik Johnson added 11 points, 6 rebounds 5 assists and 3 steals. Takal Molson added 10 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Canisius in the winning effort. Molson leads the Golden Griffins in scoring with 16.7 points per game while Reese leads Canisius with averages of 6.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. As a team, Canisius is averaging 69.6 points per game on 41.8% shooting from the field, 30.3% from behind the arc and 67.3% from the foul line this season.
Monmouth is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. Canisius is 0-9 ATS in their last 9 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Sometimes these lines tend to baffle me and also make me question if there’s something that Vegas knows that I don’t. Either way, even with Canisius picking up back-to-back wins, I’m not sure the Golden Griffins should be favored considering that Canisius has yet to cover in any of their 6 home games this season. The Golden Griffins’ issue of covering at home is something that actually stems back to last season. Monmouth’s season started extremely ugly, but the Hawks are showing signs of life during this 4-game winning streak. I’ll take Monmouth and the points as I just can’t trust Canisius at home here.
