The Akron Zips will travel to McGuirk Arena to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas this Tuesday night in College Basketball action.

The Akron Zips won their 2nd straight game and improved to 9-5 (1-0 MAC-East) on the season after defeating the Western Michigan Broncos, 56-48, this past Saturday. Akron struggled offensively, however, their defense was outstanding throughout the game and was able to pull ahead after taking a double-digit lead with 4:22 left in regulation. Akron shot just 27.9% from the field, however held Western Michigan to just 30.6% shooting from the field & 15.4% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Zips was Jimond Ivey who had 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, and 3 steals.

On the season, Akron is averaging 73.6 ppg on 42.8% shooting from the field. The Zips are averaging 10.0 three-pointers per game on 33.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Akron has been led by Daniel Utomi (15.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1.4 apg), Loren Cristian Jackson (13.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.9 apg, 1.1 spg), Jimond Ivey (13.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.1 spg), and Tyler Cheese (8.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.1 spg).

Defensively, Akron is holding their opponents to an average of 60.4 ppg on 38.6% shooting from the field. The Zips have a rebound margin of 0.5 and a turnover margin of 2.9.

The Central Michigan Chippewas won their 5th straight game and improved to 12-2 (1-0 MAC) on the season after defeating the Miami (OH) RedHawks, 84-77, this past Saturday. Central Michigan was solid on the offensive end against the RedHawks defense and pulled away after a 6-0 run gave the Chippewas a 74-64 lead with 2:58 left in regulation. Central Michigan shot 48.4% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Chippewas was Robert Montgomery who had 18 points & 9 rebounds.

On the season, Central Michigan is averaging 87.7 ppg on 47.6% shooting from the field. The Chippewas are averaging 8.3 three-pointers per game on 35.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Central Michigan has been led by Larry Austin Jr. (18.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 5.0 apg, 2.4 spg), Shawn Roundtree (15.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.4 spg), Kevin McKay (13.3 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.9 spg), and David DiLeo (11.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg).

Defensively, Central Michigan is allowing their opponents to average 74.3 ppg on 43.5% shooting from the field. The Chippewas have a rebound margin of 2.7 and a turnover margin of 4.4.

The Zips are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Chippewas are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 Tuesday games and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.

When it comes to Akron, you know what your going to get and that is a team that will shot a bunch of three-pointers and be very solid on the defensive end. Akron has disappointed when it comes to this strategy this season as coming into this game the Zips rank T-19th in three-pointers made per game, 9th in scoring defense, and 19th defensive FG%. Central Michigan has taken advantage of an easy schedule to pile up 12 wins on the season and has been led by their offense that ranks 8th in scoring offense & 60th in FG%.

Central Michigan is 7-0 at home on the season, however, I don’t think the Chippewas are that solid of a team as this is still a team that lost by 27-points in by far their toughest game of the season agianst TCU. Akron is a solid team that gave Nevada & Clemson all they could handle and as I think the Zips defense will be able to slow down the Chippewas offense, I’m taking Akron to win this pick-em on the road.
