The Rice Owls and the Charlotte 49ers meet in C-USA college basketball action from the Dale F. Halton Arena on Thursday night.
The Rice Owls will look to rebound after losing 4 of their last 5 games following an 89-86 loss to UAB in their last outing. Trey Murphy III led the Owls with 24 points on 5 of 7 shooting from 3-point range with a 9 of 9 mark from the foul line along with 6 rebounds while Chris Mullins added 16 points with a team-high 4 assists. Ako Adams added 12 points with 4 threes, while Quentin Millora-Brown had 11 points with a team-high 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Robert Martin added 10 points to round out the scoring in double figures for Rice in the loss, while Jack Williams had 8 rebounds of his own as well in the win. Mullins leads Rice in scoring with 13 points per game while Williams leads the Owls on the glass with 7.8 rebounds per game and Adams leads Rice in assists with 2.8 assists per game this season. As a team, Rice is averaging 76 points per game on 44.4% shooting from the field, 35% from 3-point range and 68.5% from the foul line this season.
The Charlotte 49ers will be out to snap a 3-game losing streak after a 57-53 loss to UTEP in their last outing. Jon Davis led the 49ers with 23 points along with a team-high 4 assists and a pair of steals while Brandon Younger added 10 points with a team-high 6 rebounds as the only other Charlotte player to score in double figures in the loss. Davis leads Charlotte with an average of 21 points and 3.6 assists per game while Milos Supica leads the 49ers in rebounding with 5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Charlotte is averaging 59.2 points per game on 40.7% shooting from the field, 30.4% from behind the 3-point line and 72.9% from the foul line this season.
Rice is 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 games following a loss. Charlotte is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 conference games. The favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams and the home team is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Rice has lost 4 of their last 5 games, so I’m not trying to back the Owls in this current form. However, Rice and almost a free bucket is a better option than a 49ers team who is sliding just as much and struggles to put up 60 points on any given night. The Owls are outscoring Charlotte by 16.8 points per game on the year, and while Charlotte has been solid ATS at home as of late, I’m just not buying the 49ers here. Give me Rice and the points.
