Tennessee Volunteers -17.5 -- Over/Under: 151
The 15-seed Colgate Raiders and 2-seed Tennessee Volunteers will square off at Nationwide Arena this Friday afternoon in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Colgate Raiders (24-10; 13-5 Patriot) earned the 15-seed in the South Region after winning the Patriot Championship by defeating the Bucknell Bison, 94-80, this past Wednesday. Colgate was led by their offense throughout the season and that was on full display agianst Bucknell as the Raiders shot an impressive 57.7% from the field and 57.1% from beyond the arc in their factory agianst the Bison. Leading the way for the Raiders in the victory was Jordan Burns who had 35 points, 6 assist, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals.
On the season, Colgate is averaging 75.8 ppg on 48.0% shooting from the field. The Raiders are averaging 9.0 three-pointers per game on 38.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Colgate has been led by Rapolas Ivanauskas (16.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.6 apg), Jordan Burns (15.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.2 spg), Will Rayman (13.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 apg), and Tucker Richardson (8.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.3 spg).
Defensively, Colgate is allowing their opponents to average 70.0 ppg on 43.4% shooting from the field. The Raiders have a rebound margin of 4.0 and a turnover margin of -0.9.
The Tennessee Volunteers had a SEC Championship to forget about after being defeated by the Auburn Tigers by an 84-64 margin, however, the Volunteers used a balanced attack on both end of the courts to finish their season with an impressive 29-5 record (15-3 SEC), earned the Volunteers the 2-seed. Tennessee shot the ball well agianst Auburn in the SEC Championship, as they shot 45.1% from the field & 53.3% from beyond the arc, however, the Volunteers struggled with turnovers and couldn’t fight back after Auburn took a 62-40 lead midway through the 2nd half. Leading the way for the Volunteers was Lamonte Turner who had 24 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.
On the season, Tennessee is averaging 81.8 ppg on 49.7% shooting from the field. The Volunteers are averaging 6.9 three-pointers per game on 36.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Tennessee has been led by Grant Williams (19.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.2 spg, 1.4 bpg), Admiral Schofield (16.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.1 apg), Jordan Bone (13.5 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 6.2 apg), and Lamonte Turner (10.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.3 spg).
Defensively, Tennessee is allowing their opponents to average 68.6 ppg on 39.9% shooting from the field. The Volunteers have a rebound margin of 3.4 and a turnover margin of 1.7.
The Raiders are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Volunteers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 NCAA Tournament games and 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games following a double-digit loss at home.
Colgate will be playing in their first NCAA Tournament game since 1996 and comes into this game riding an impressive 11-game winning streak, however, it’s tough to see the Raiders being able to really compete against the Volunteers as the Raiders lost to both Syracuse & Penn State by double-digits during their non-conference schedule this season. Tennessee raced out to a 23-1 record this season and at one point in the season was the top-ranked team in the country, and although they struggled a bit down the stretch, this is still a very dangerous team that ranks 20th in scoring offense, 7th in FG%, and 18th in defensive FG%.
Colgate has the shooting ability to hang around with most teams as they rank 26th in FG% & 14th in 3P-FG%, however, they didn’t have much success on the offensive end against the better teams they faced in their non-conference schedule as agianst Syracuse, Penn State, & Pittsburgh the Raiders averaged just 58.3 ppg. Tennessee should be able to score at will agianst the Raiders in this one and as I think they’ll give the Colgate offense some trouble, I think Tennessee runs away with this one and covers this large spread. Good Luck!
