The East Carolina Pirates and the UConn Huskies meet in AAC college basketball action from the XL Center on Sunday afternoon.
The East Carolina Pirates come into this game looking to build on a 66-65 win over Tulane in their last outing. Jayden Gardner led the Pirates with 15 points along with a team-high 9 rebounds while Seth LeDay added 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Isaac Fleming added 11 points with a team-high 6 assists while Dimitrije Spasojevic had 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting to round out the group of double-digit scorers for ECU in the win. Gardner leads the Pirates with an average of 18.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game while Fleming leads East Carolina in assists with 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, East Carolina is averaging 68.2 points per game on 42.4% shooting from the field, 26.1% from behind the arc and 67% from the foul line this season.
The UConn Huskies could use a win after splitting their last 6 games following a 73-67 loss to UCF in their last outing. Jalen Adams led the Huskies with 27 points on 9 of 22 shooting with 5 threes while Christian Vital added 13 points with 6 rebounds. Tarin Smith added 11 points with a team-high 4 assists to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for UConn in the loss. Josh Carlton added 4 points with a team-high 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Adams leads UConn in scoring with 18.6 points per game while Vital leads the Huskies in rebounding with 5.6 rebounds per game and Alterique Gilbert leads UConn in assists with 3.8 assists per game this season. As a team, UConn is averaging 78.2 points per game on 46.3% shooting from the field, 36.1% from behind the 3-point line and 69.5% from the foul line this season.
East Carolina is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games following a win. UConn is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games. East Carolina is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams at UConn.
East Carolina is a hard team to back for the most part, especially when the Pirates are on the road, where they are being outscored by 22.2 points in conference play this season. However, the Pirates have also shown the ability to hang around on the road with teams like UCF and Memphis, and have had all of the recent success against UConn, both overall and at the XL Center. The trends tell me that UConn is often overpriced in this matchup, and I think this could be another case of that so I’ll take a stab at East Carolina and the points in this one.
